Telfairia occidentalis is a tropical vine grown in West and Central Africa as a leaf vegetable and for its edible seeds. Common names for the plant include fluted gourd, fluted pumpkin are Ugu (in the Igbo language), ikong-ubong (in the Efik/Ibibio language), makasa y’ekutu (in Lingala), akatshi w'amoke (in otetela) and in Yuroba (Ewe Aworoko).
Pumpkin leaves can be consumed in various ways – It can be made as a soup, added to salads, made as a dessert or eaten raw. Ugu leaf has a healthy amount of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron.
